  • I believe I found a diet plan I can live with for the rest of my life. It's called the Glycemic Impact Diet. The bottom line of it is that you have a healthy balance of 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fats. It's supposed to be one of the easiest and healthiest ways to long term weight loss. So I'm going to give it a go and so will my whole family.

It includes whole-grains which I am all about so I'm encouraged that this is something I can enjoy. What I will have to learn to do is to identify foods that fall into this catagory. I'll have to do some research but I will try to post daily menu plans for ideas if someone is interested in this. Here's a sample menu:

Breakfast: Vegetable omelet with wheat bread and strawberries

Lunch: Grilled cheese and tomato sandwich with salad and milk (the milk will be hard for me as I'm lactose intolerant)

Afternoon snack: Roast beef roll ups with flatbread

Dinner: Chicken Florentine with brown rice and fruit

Late night snack- Yogurt with raspberries and almonds (look at that Freeky! Almonds!!)

So I think this is fairly close to what we eat already so it should be a good transition into a healthier eating style. I'll keep you posted!

We start the Discovery Body Challange on Saturday! Are you motivated? Ready to go? Need a bit of encouragement?

You got it, whatever you need!

    Edited...

Ok I read a few reviews and most of them lead me to eDiets and I don't like that website so I'm going to look for a cookbook or something that will help make menus. I already eat a lot of whole grains but my white startches are where I probably get in trouble lol I'm not willing to give up potatoes..ever! I love them too much but I also enjoy sweet potatoes so I may have to incorporate more of them in.

Danni... I just typed in the diet name in google and came up with a lot of the same information.

One thing that a few sites did warn was this was hard to follow long term and people fall off the wagon and gain back weight. So I may look at altering it to fit into my plan.

I plan on taking in about 1800 calories a day. That is reducing my caloric intake from about 3200 a day to 1800. Reducing my liquid calories is my first step. I have started making more salads and need to purchase more fruit. I need to have an orchard in my back yard for as much fruit as we go through already. See we don't keep a high amount of chips or other snack foods so it's not that which is making me gain or rather not loose. It's lack of exercise, liquid calories and a high sugar intake I believe.

So I'm going to be walking daily again and reducing calories and incorporating the GI diet as it works for me.

I'll be using the Discovery Body Challange plan for the 8 week program though.. I think I have to work with that plan for it to be successful. Now that doesn't mean that I'm going to use all the food on their menu because I can't eat some of it but I can substitute similar and I think I'll be ok.

    I'm pumped up! Whooooooooooooooo

  • Is there a link to view more info on this?? It sounds like something we might be able to follow as well.

    I love your attitude!!

    Have a happy day!

  • I think they have milk for folks whom are lactose intolerant. You might look at the store next time you go. I ahve given up diets, and I am just cutting my calories back to 1000 per day along with getting some more exercise.

  • I have always heard, too, that 40/30/30 is best.

  • MY aunt and uncle had alot of success with the GI diet. My uncle said to me "It's a great diet! I can eat as much of the crap I hate as I want! ) LOL He was teasing us
Don't do the milk if you are lactose intolerant... it will only make you feel worse! Can you buy lactaid? that would help.
I have confidence you will do great!!

  • that sounds like a very reasonable diet that can be a life change.  i don't know if you remember but rachel has problems with milk too and i either use soy milk, i find it yucky but she likes it, or there actually is lactose free milk.  it really tastes like milk and i use it for cooking and things where the whole family will be eating/drinking it.

  • Oh! And no ediets - just use http://www.fitday.com. To help me eat what I needed to eat through out the day, I would plan my meals on it in the morning so I knew my calorie intake before I even started eating. I downloaded the program, but you can also use the free online version (which is great for bouncing between computers).

  • Sounds like a great plan to follow. Hm, maybe if you didn't think of it in terms of "dieting" it might be easier to maintain? It's a lifestyle, really. Anyway, you've got a great plan and I hope you're able to stick with it, and I hope the family remains supportive.

  • You sound great!!!!  Keep it up!!!!!!!

  • oh and The South Beach Diet is a good read, too...although I don't really recomment following the plan exactly, he does have menus and recipes - you could just add more carbs to it.

  • Cool! I was doing the 40/30/30 thing when I started going to the gym a year and a half ago. (I had hit a plateau on WW and needed to try something different.) That Fitday program that Jennie discovered is very compatible with it too (I like the software version). It shows a pie chart of what % fat carbs protein you have eaten. Love that! I think the Zone by Dr Sears is the same principle.

  • Good luck to you!  The base gym is having a Biggest Loser contest, 6 week version.  I am thinking about joining it.

  • Good luck with the diet! The only thing I find that really works for me (that I mostly stick to, that is), is just trying to really cut down on fried foods and heavy creams like sour cream or butter, etc ... Otherwise I've been known to totally binge on something I've tried to cut completely out.

Plus I hate to cook ... any diet that makes me do a good amount of cooking is going to fall to the side fairly quickly.

ryc: It's ok to not know how to comment ... it's like a toothache - I seem incapable of thinking about anything else right now lol

  • That sounds awesome. Only problem I have with the menu is that I like cheese with my omelets and I don't like nuts of any sort.
